Deck Dreams on the Canal: Why We Chose Spotted Gum for This Coastal Build
There’s something about being near the water that just makes everything feel calmer. Maybe it’s the way the light hits the surface, or how time slows down when you’re barefoot on timber with a coffee in hand. That was the vibe we wanted to create with this canal-side deck in Maroochydore—and it’s safe to say, it delivered.
The goal? A timeless, low-maintenance outdoor space that blends seamlessly into its coastal surrounds. A spot to soak in the view, host a lazy Sunday lunch, or watch the sun dip behind the palms. And like any good build, it all starts with choosing the right materials.
Why We Went with Spotted Gum
When it comes to decking, especially in coastal locations like this one, not all timbers are created equal. That’s why we chose Spotted Gum.
Spotted Gum isn’t just beautiful (though those rich tones and wavy grain patterns are definitely easy on the eyes). It’s also one of the most durable Australian hardwoods on the market. Naturally dense and oily, it holds up exceptionally well in harsh environments—including salty air and full sun—which makes it a top pick for homes near the water.
Plus, it weathers like a dream. Over time, it softens into a gorgeous silvery tone if left untreated, or it can be oiled to maintain that warm, honey-coloured glow. Either way, it’s a win.
The Design Details
We wanted this deck to feel open, relaxed, and like an extension of the home. That meant clean lines, minimal fuss, and finishes that won’t date. The cable balustrade was an easy choice—practical for safety, but visually light so it doesn’t block the view.
The posts were custom-painted in crisp white to tie in with the home’s palette, while the handrail brings warmth and continuity with the Spotted Gum decking underfoot. We also added subtle shadow gaps in the timber boards to elevate the detail and allow for natural movement over time.
Built over the canal edge, the deck is engineered to last with marine-grade fixings and elevated piers to avoid long-term exposure to water damage. Because let’s face it—this close to the ocean, cutting corners isn’t an option.

A Few Things We’ve Learned from Building Coastal Decks
- Durability matters. Don’t skimp on your materials—especially when building by the water. You need timber that can handle salt, sun, and storms.
- Think ahead with finishes. Whether you want that rustic weathered look or prefer to oil and maintain the colour, planning your finish up front will help your deck age gracefully.
- It’s more than a platform. A well-built deck becomes a lifestyle zone. It frames the view, sets the mood, and adds serious value to a home.
- Design for the setting. Every detail—from the direction of the boards to the type of balustrade—should enhance the natural surroundings, not fight them.
